My PhD is in Classics and Archaeology from the University of Kent, while my first MA is in War Studies from KCL and my second in Archaeology from UCL. I have been a Trustee of the Council for British Archaeology, am an Honorary Research Fellow at the University of Kent, and am a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries. I regularly give public lectures and talks.

Award Winning and Best-Selling Historian
I have written over 20 books on Roman and classical world themes, most recently The African Emperor about Septimius Severus which was a Sunday Times best-seller, and well-reviewed in The Spectator, Daily Telegraph and Wall Street Journal. Earlier, my Roman Britain’s Missing Legion was a BBC History Book of the Year 2021, while my Sea Eagles of Empire about the Roman fleet in Britain was the Military History Matters book of the year 2017. I am currently writing Death on the Palatine: Cold Cases of the Roman Emperors, due to be published by Icon publishing Ltd in April 2027. I have also written a wide variety of articles for the mainstream, archaeological, history and gaming media.
